Information Technology Infrastructure Library 4 (ITIL® 4)

On January 1 2019, AXELOS Global Best Practice will release ITIL® 4, the world’s most widely accepted service management framework.  The new release of ITIL® 4 is aligned with value to the business and technology world, and integration with Agile, DevOps and digital transformation. ITIL 4 will be much more relevant to developers, practitioners and businesses as a whole through a holistic view of delivering products and services.

ITIL 4 supports the existing investment that people and organizations have made into ITIL, as it is an expansion on the existing framework. That investment is protected because ITIL 4 provides a practical and flexible transition that helps organizations adopt the new ways of working brought by the modern digital world.

However, ITIL v3/2011 remains is as relevant as ever and continues to be in demand globally by hundreds and thousands of IT practitioners. All certifications for ITIL will remain valid following the update and will continue to be recognized as valuable certifications globally.

We would like to recognize the achievements of individuals who have progressed through the ITIL v3 certification scheme. To this end, Axelos has created the ITIL Managing Professional Transition Module. It is designed for ITIL v3 candidates who are ITIL Experts or who have achieved 17 credits from across the v3 scheme. Those with 17 ITIL v3/2011 credits can:

  • take MALC and become an ITIL v3 Expert (which will remain being recognized)  OR
  • skip MALC and take ITIL 4 Managing Professional Transition Module and get the ITIL 4 Managing Professional Designation

Candidates with less than 17 credits are encouraged to continue to take ITIL v3 courses to build your credits to 17 so you are able to transition to ITIL 4 certification. The v3 courses are expected to continue until mid-2020. Mountainview will continue to offer the ITIL v3 courses and help you with your certification process.

The Certification scheme looks like this:

ITIL® Managing Professional (ITIL MP) targets IT practitioners working within technology and digital teams across businesses. The Managing Professional (MP) stream provides practical and technical knowledge about how to run successful IT projects, teams and workflows.

ITIL® Strategic Leader (ITIL SL) recognises the value of ITIL, not just for IT operations, but for all digitally enabled services. Becoming an ITIL Strategic Leader (ITIL SL) demonstrates that the professional has a clear understanding of how IT influences and directs business strategy.

To obtain the designation ITIL® Managing Professional or ITIL® Strategic Leader, the professional must complete all modules in each stream, with ITIL® Strategist being a universal module for both streams.

If a candidate has achieved ITIL v3 Expert, they can take the ITIL Managing Professional Transition module as soon as it is released to achieve the ITIL Managing Professional designation.
